3 of the best gourmet hot dog recipes

Hot dogs get a bad wrap – those sad franks floating in murky warm water slapped on a bun and squirted with sugary sauces. But if you take a little bit more time and upgrade the ingredients, a hot dog can be a decadent and surprisingly healthy lunch or cheeky dinner option.

These recipes go beyond the typical New York style hot dog of relish and American mustard, although that variety is a great on-the-go snack as proved by the ubiquity of hot dog carts in that city.

1. Mexican HOT dog

Ingredients

  • Avocado (mashed)
  • Sour cream
  • Can of ready-made beef/bean mix (e.g. Stagg Chili or similar)
  • Jalapenos (optional)
  • Pack of soft hot dog buns
  • Recommended hot dogs: Regular beef hot dogs

Method

  1. Boil hot dogs according to packet instructions
  2. Heat up your chosen chili on the stove
  3. Meanwhile have your hot dog buns warming in a moderate oven
  4. Serve your hot dogs on the bun topped with chili bean mix, sour cream, avocado and jalapenos if using.
  5. Repeat (you won’t be able to have only one)

2. Traditional German Bratwurst

Ingredients

  • German mustard (if you can get it) or mild mustard as substitute
  • Onions, have then thinly sliced
  • Sauerkraut
  • Crusty long rolls
  • Recommended hot dogs: Bratwurst or pork sausage.

Method

  1. Cook your bratwurst slowly over medium heat – that way they get nice and brown all over and cook through properly
  2. While they are cooking, slice your buns almost in half and warm in a moderate oven
  3. Melt 50gm butter in a saucepan and then cook onions until beginning to caramelise. Then add sauerkraut (to your liking) and heat through
  4. Serve your bratwurst inside the crusty roll, top with onion sauerkraut mixture then drizzle with mustard

3. Vietnamese Banh Mi Hot Dog

Ingredients

  • Carrot, shaved
  • Cucumber, shaved
  • Radish cut into matchsticks
  • Bunch of fresh coriander
  • Thinly sliced white onion
  • Sliced red chilli (optional)
  • Mayonnaise
  • Duck or chicken pâté
  • French-style baguette
  • Recommended hot dogs: Duck or pork sausage, or regular beef hot dogs

Method

  1. Slowly panfry your chosen sausage on medium heat to ensure uniform cooking and browning
  2. Cut baguette into sections large enough for your sausages and cut almost in half
  3. Coat one side of the baguette with pâté and the other with mayonnaise
  4. Place sausage in baguette, then top with remaining ingredients to taste
