Aussie fruit & veg in season this winter

Aussie fruit & veg in season this winter

The stereotypical idea of winter as a time of scarcity just doesn't hold true for Australia. Temperatures may be a little lower, but we don't have to change our diets all that much.

Still, there are benefits to eating fruits and vegetables in season, especially when you head to your local farmer's market for the freshest produce. You can save money, you'll be supporting local farmers, and you might even discover some new flavours.

Here's a list of Aussie fruit and veg that's currently in season from June to August, along with a couple of seasonal recipes you can try.

Winter fruits

While some fruits are available year-round, like bananas, winter sees the return of many old favourites. These include:

  • Apple
  • Grapefruit
  • Kiwifruit (June)
  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Mandarin
  • Orange
  • Papaya (July)
  • Pear (June)
  • Pineapple

Directions

  1. Chop the pineapple into chunks and add it to a food processor or blender. Blend until smooth.
  2. Heat the ginger, sugar and water in a saucepan until the sugar dissolves. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 5 minutes.
  3. Add the pineapple juice to the pan and bring to the boil again. Simmer for a further 2 minutes.
  4. Strain the pineapple juice to remove the ginger and pineapple pulp, then refrigerate.
  5. Dilute with still or sparkling water and enjoy!
