Spooky Halloween Treats

Spooky Halloween Treats

Whether you’re hosting a Halloween party or simply want to do something fun for the kids (and the adults!), we’ve got two spooky Halloween recipes for you to try this October 31st.

Haunted Pizza

Using a ready-bought pizza base mix, this is an easy recipe that can be made when you get home from work and served whole or cut into slices for a party. This serves two but multiply the quantities to suit your needs.

Ingredients

  • 200ml passata
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 x 145g pizza base mix
  • 4 slices salami, cut into bat shapes
  • 7 pitted black olives, halved
  • 125g ball mozzarella, torn into pieces

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to gas mark 7/220℃.
  2. Bring the passata and olive oil to the boil in a pan and then reduce the heat, simmering for 5 minutes or until thickened.
  3. Pour the pizza base mix into a bowl and stir in 100ml warm water. Mix until you have a soft dough, then tip onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 minutes, or until it is smooth. Roll out the dough to 24cm in diameter and transfer to a large, greased baking sheet. If you want a crust, turn up the edges of the base. Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes.
  4. Thinly slice 8 of the olive halves lengthways into 4 to make 8 legs for each of the 4 spiders (there should be 32 legs in total). Take 2 more olive halves and dice to make eyes for the mozzarella ghosts.
  5. Spread the passata over the pizza base, allowing for a 1cm border. Top with the salami bats and arrange the mozzarella pieces into ghost shapes. Place the rest of the olive halves cut-side down on the base, adding 4 legs per side.
  6. Place the pizza in the preheated oven and cook for 15-18 minutes, until bubbling and golden. Remove from the oven and leave to cool for a minute, before adding the olive eyes to the melted mozzarella ghosts.

Frozen Banana Ghosts

Your kids will think these white chocolate-covered frozen bananas are sticks of yummy ice cream as they taste indulgent and look fantastic. Just make sure there’s room in your freezer for them all on a single baking tray.

Ingredients

  • 200g white chocolate
  • 4 medium-sized ripe bananas, peeled and cut in half horizontally.
  • 50g desiccated coconut
  • Handful dark chocolate drops
  • 8 icy pole sticks

Method

  1. Melt the chocolate in a heat-resistant bowl over a pan of simmering water and then set aside.
  2. Push an icy pole stick into the middle of each banana piece.
  3. Line a large baking tray with baking paper.
  4. Coat each banana piece with chocolate (a pastry brush helps) and sprinkle with a generous amount of coconut before placing them on the tray.
  5. Using the chocolate drops, create two eyes and a mouth on each. You could even cut the drops to make eyebrows.
  6. Freeze the banana ghosts for a minimum of 4 hours and up to a week.
