Residential Battery Scheme open for WA households

The West Australian Government has taken another bold step towards clean, sustainable energy with a new battery rebate. The Residential Battery Scheme, which began on 1 July 2025, offers eligible households a discount when installing home battery systems.

A battery system can offer significant energy savings, as it stores electricity in a similar fashion to a power bank for a mobile phone. When there is excess energy, the battery charges, and when the grid is busier and more expensive, owners can use energy from the battery.

Under the scheme, households could save as much as $1,600 per year on energy costs when pairing a battery with rooftop solar.

Note: these figures are based on applicants with a 10kWh battery.

The State Government has invested $337 million into the initiative, which is part of a $2.3 billion Federal Government Cheaper Home Batteries program. The goal is to get more homes with energy storage, but batteries aren't cheap. In most cases a 10kWh battery will cost more than $11,000 after installation.

To combat that expense, the scheme also offers no-interest loans of up to $10,000 for households with a combined income of less than $210,000.

Interested customers will need to be part of a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) and can apply for both rebate and loan via their battery retailer.

What is a Virtual Power Plant?

A VPP allows electricity stored in a home battery to be shared back into the grid during periods of high usage. When the grid is under stress, a third party - such as an energy retailer - can take control of the VPP and instruct it to push power back to the wider community.

As it stabilises the grid, the VPP is effectively reducing the waste that comes from excess power generation. This is a significant step in creating an efficient energy environment, and a clean, sustainable future of less pollution from fossil fuels.

Those in a VPP network aren't giving away their energy for free - they'll be compensated for what they share with the grid. And, if VPPs become commonplace, it's believed they'll lower peak prices across the market, making for cheaper bills.
