Knowing how to read your meter can be useful if you have received an estimated bill from Alinta Energy and need you to verify the reading.
Usually, your gas meter will be at the front of your house, quite close to the street. Look near your letterbox or driveway.
There are two types of gas meters in Australia – metric and imperial.
Newer metric meters are the most common in Australian homes. Metric meters have a display showing a line of digits representing the usage in cubic meters (usually displayed as m3.) They are easy to read – simple record the numbers from left to right, ignoring the red digits (these are used for testing only).
Imperial meters measure gas consumption in cubic feet (usually displayed as ft3) rather than cubic metres. They have numbered dials. For an accurate reading, stand directly in front of the meter and record the numbers the hands point to, from left to right. If a hand points to the middle of two numbers, record the lower number. The exception is if the hand falls between 0 and 9, in which case record the number as 9.
