Moving home checklist
There's a lot to juggle when you're moving home, but the right checklist can help you stay one step ahead.
Whether you're already with Alinta Energy or joining us at your new place, here's everything you need to organise, plan and tick off for a smooth, stress-free move.
6-8 weeks before moving
Organise your move early
Get ahead on admin
- Update your home and contents insurance with your moving date and new address.
- Start creating a list of places you'll need to update your address, such as banks, licences, subscriptions and services.
2-4 weeks before moving
Start updating your details
Notify essential services and providers of your new address, including:
- Banks and financial services.
- Driver licence and vehicle registration.
- Medicare and private health.
- Electoral roll.
- Toll accounts.
- Schools, childcare or workplaces.
- Streaming services, online shopping accounts and subscriptions.
Other good-to-dos
- Go through your pantry and use or remove old food stocks or perishables you won't want to take with you.
- Book cleaners or carpet cleaning for your old place if you think it's needed.
- Organise your internet connection early, especially if a technician needs to visit.
- Set up mail redirection through Australia Post to catch anything sent to your old address.
Final days before moving
Make sure both homes are ready
- Confirm key access, building entry codes, parking details and any lift bookings for moving day.
- Pack an essentials box with the things you'll need right away. Things like your kettle, snacks, phone chargers, toiletries, medication and first-night basics.
- Defrost your fridge and freezer so they're ready for transport.
- Disconnect and prepare large appliances, such as washing machines, dishwashers and dryers.
- Make a moving day plan for kids and pets so they're safe, settled and out of the way.

Moving day
At your old home
- Take a final meter read (a photo is ideal for accuracy and easy reference).
- Do a final walk-through to check every room, cupboard and outdoor area.
- Do a basic clean of your home if required by your lease or contract.
At your new home
- Check that your energy is connected.
- Test all the essentials: light switches, hot water, stovetop, heating and cooling.
- Do a quick safety check, including smoke alarms, tripping hazards and the fuse box location.
First week in
Get settled
- Unpack your key rooms first — kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms — so your new home becomes functional quickly, but you're not overwhelmed with unpacking.
- Update any services or accounts you may have missed during your move.
Explore your new area
- Look up your bin day and local waste collection schedule.
- Find your nearby essentials: supermarket, pharmacy, childcare, vet, gym, post office or anything that helps you feel settled and at home.
You've organised the move, switched on the essentials, and checked off the important tasks. Now it's time to enjoy the good stuff — feeling comfortable, settled and in control at your new place.
