We've begun construction of the Reeves Plains Energy Hub

Our Executive Director, Merchant Energy, Ken Woolley recently visited South Australia to mark the start of construction at the Reeves Plains Energy Hub. Here he reflects on a moment three years in the making.

We’ve officially begun construction on Stage 1 of the Reeves Plains Energy Hub — a project three years in the making and a significant moment for our team and partners.

Reeves Plains is Alinta Energy’s third battery project, building on the experience we’ve gained at Newman and Wagerup. Set for completion in 2028, Stage 1 of the project will deliver a 250‑megawatt battery with four hours of storage, capable of supplying the equivalent of around 300,000 South Australian households for up to four hours, a nationally significant piece of infrastructure.

With the Reeves Plains Energy Hub, we’re working towards producing energy in the state for the first time since the closure of the Northern Power Station near Port Augusta in 2016. At its peak this site will have over 100 people on it, and that is a great boon for the regional economics of the area.

Having an energy asset here again is something we’re genuinely excited about, not only for the role it will play in supporting the power system, but for how it allows us to better serve our electricity customers in South Australia.

This project reflects the commitment, expertise and patience of our construction team, our partners and suppliers, local contractors, landholders, network businesses and the many stakeholders who have worked with us to reach this point.

South Australia already runs one of the highest penetrations of renewable energy in the world, and that makes assets like this even more important.

A lot of work sits behind a project like this, and it’s been a genuine team effort. GenusPlus Group is leading construction on site, working alongside our key suppliers, including CATL, who are delivering 194 battery units, and Power Electronics, supplying 89 inverters. We’ve also worked closely with ElectraNet as the transmission network service provider; GHD, supporting us as owner’s engineer; and Wilson Transformer Company, engaged by Genus to supply transformers.

We’re grateful to Genus and all our partners who joined us on the day to mark the start of construction, and to the local community and council for their ongoing engagement and support. We’re also proud of our partnership with Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation and our commitment to respecting and protecting their culture and heritage as we deliver this project on Kaurna Country.

As we move into construction, we remain focused on listening, communicating openly and delivering the project safely and to a high standard.
