Helping the helpers: Supporting A Better Life for Foster Kids

Loy Yang B volunteers kept up their long-time support for A Better Life for Foster Kids by wrapping gifts for foster children and their families in the lead-up to Christmas.

At A Better Life for Foster Kids, the mission is clear and profound: to ensure every child entering foster care feels safe, supported, and valued.

Too often, children arrive with nothing—no clothes, no essentials, just uncertainty. That’s why this Gippsland-based charity steps in with crisis cases filled with basics like clothing and toiletries, allowing carers to focus on what truly matters: the child’s emotional wellbeing.

The reality can be heartbreaking. Many children enter out-of-home care with only the clothes on their back. Thanks to the financial support of community partners like Loy Yang B, these children receive a new suitcase packed with essentials they can call their own, offering a sense of belonging during what is often a frightening and distressing time.

But support isn’t just about dollars. Sometimes, it’s about rolling up our sleeves. When a car ram-raided the charity’s Sale shopfront in July, Loy Yang B staff joined other volunteers to help founder, Heather Baird, clear and clean the space. Their efforts ensured the charity could keep its focus where it belongs—on vulnerable foster children and carers who need immediate support.

And in the lead-up to Christmas, Loy Yang B volunteers lent a helping hand in another way, which involved wrapping gifts for foster children and the children in foster families. It’s a simple gesture, but one that reminds us that every child deserves to feel special.

As Heather says, “Without all this support, we wouldn’t be able to reach as many children as we do. It shows that somebody out there believes in what we’re doing and that spurs you on every day of the week!”

We’re proud to stand alongside this incredible charity. Their work is a powerful reminder of what community is all about. For us, it's about lending a hand and doing what we can, whether that’s big or small.
