If you’re working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, you may be eligible to claim your energy expenses from the ATO at tax time.

ATO has introduced a simplified method of calculating deductions – the ‘shortcut method’. You can claim a deduction of 80 cents for each hour you work from home from 1 March to 30 June 2020 for running expenses like heating, cooling and internet usage.

It’s worth checking the ATO website to see if that applies to you.

Try not to panic – we’ll work with you to keep you connected. We can help you with arranging a payment plan or alternative payment options based on your individual circumstances. For more information, see our Continuous Energy Program and ‘All about bill smoothing’.

If you’ve been financially impacted by COVID-19, we’re here to support you with payment assistance options and advice too. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch by calling 13 13 58 or visit alintaenergy.com.au/update to find out how we can help.

Having a great value gas plan is an important first step in minimising your energy costs. But there are other factors that can lead to higher than expected bill.

In most cases, you’ve simply used more gas than usual. Households typically use gas for heating, hot water and cooking – all the things that make a cold winter’s day more comfortable.

If you’ve received a bill that is higher than expected, take a look at our handy checklist to investigate a little further.

Here are some simple ways you can reduce your bill this winter.

  • Heat your home moderately. Run your gas heater on a low to moderate temperate – even a couple of degrees can make a difference to your gas bill.
  • Draught-proof your home. Draught-proof your home by sealing any gaps or cracks to stop heated air from escaping.
  • Go eco. Most washing machines and dishwashers will have an “eco” mode, which washes clothes or dishes for a shorter time at a lower temperature.
  • Switch your shower head. You can save even more hot water by switching to a low-flow shower head.

  • We offer a bill smoothing solution, which breaks your quarterly bill into a monthly direct debit, so you pay a smaller amount more often.

  • We can offer you a payment extension on your current bill. If you have an amount outstanding related to prior bills, please contact us on 13 13 58, with your bill handy to discuss your options.

  • Most banking services will let you set up automatic recurring payments, which you can use to make separate payments on your bill before the due date.

Bill smoothing is a way of making your gas bill more manageable by breaking it into smaller payments throughout the year.

Your Alinta Energy bill is issued quarterly (once every three months) after your gas meter is read. When we set up bill smoothing, we calculate your total usage for a year, then break that down into 12 monthly payments. For example, if your gas bill is $150 each quarter, then you’d pay $50 once a month instead.

The amount is debited straight from your nominated credit card or bank account.

Not only does this remove the stress of paying your bill manually, it means the payments will be the same every time – so you can say goodbye to winter bill shock!

More than great energy.

That's better™.
