Top 5 tips for saving energy this summer

Saving energy can help you save money. During warmer months it’s easy for your energy usage to increase. But, as the amount of energy you use increases, so too can your bill.

These 5 helpful tips could help you save energy and a few pennies this summer.

1. Cooling

Heating and cooling are the highest contributors to your energy bill. Carefully manage your air conditioner usage and increase the temperature setting to the recommended range of 21-25°c for summer. Check out more of our top tips for cooling.

2. Hot water

Turn down the temperature of your hot water (so you’re mixing more cold water to get the right temperature). You won’t need it so hot in summer.

3. Lighting

Lighting can account for 10-25% of your energy bill. LEDs are the most energy efficient light globe. If you haven’t already, replace you’re your old halogen light globes with LEDs.

4. Standby power

If you’re not using it, unplug it. Electronics and appliances will continue to draw down power when they’re on standby – so you end up paying for electricity you’re not actually using. Canstar Blue estimates this costs Australian households over $100 a year – ouch!

5. Upgrade your appliances

Often older appliances use more power, so consider upgrading your appliances. New fridges and freezers can use about 40% less energy than older models.
