Not only do we change our immediate surroundings, but we change the landscape around us. The further we go, the more stark the changes can feel.
Here are some things to consider when you move house, so you can be prepared for how moving could change your life, and your family’s life.
Settling in is something that can take days for some people, and years for others.
The settling in period can be one of the hardest things to endure after a move. When people move cities or countries, it’s often said it can take up to 2 years to feel happy and settled.
And even after years, some people may not feel completely settled still.
Be kind to yourself. Don’t expect to be bouncing off the walls within weeks. Depending on your reasons for the move, there may be a grief process involved and you may need to allow yourself time to come to terms with the loss of your old home or life.
When unpacking, try to find the best spots for your belongings. If you spend months moving furniture around because it’s not working for you, it can delay feeling at home.
If you do need to rearrange your furniture or personal effects, it’s not the end of the world, but it might take you longer to feel like it’s really your home and not just a place you live.
Spending months living amongst boxes and packing materials is not ideal.
Set yourself a deadline to get everything unpacked in your new home.
If needed, rope in friends or family to help you get the job done quicker.
If you’re not used to your new suburb, you might feel lost when trying to get from A to B.
Alleviate this stress by familiarising yourself with the area before you make the move (if you can).
Work out the best routes to work or the kids’ school, and how long it will take you to make your regular journeys. Familiarity with these simple routine trips will help you feel more at home in your new location quicker.
It’s also a good idea to work out where your local amenities are before you move.
You might have already taken this into consideration when choosing a new home, but knowing where your local doctor, dentist, shops and schools are is important when you move areas, cities, or states.
Don’t waste time – introduce yourself to your new neighbours shortly after you’ve moved in and get to know them.
Having a good support system around you in your new home will help you feel part of the street and the local community.
Once you’ve unpacked, invite your neighbours, friends or family around for a housewarming or barbeque. These bonds can last for years when started on solid foundations of friendship and food!
You might have always thought of yourself as a city slicker, so a tree change might be something that was never on your radar.
When you make a big change to your location, it can come as a shock to the system, so make sure you give yourself time to adjust.
Leave the labels behind and focus on who you are now, and what you want from your new life, home and location.
